Most people who are familiar with foster care are aware of long-term care, where a child is placed in the care of a family until they are 18 years old. However, there are other types of care available and we need carers for all of them.

Respite

This type of care involves having a child in your care for short stays, such as a regular weekend, school holidays or one-off overnight stays. Respite provides longer term foster carers with a break, but is also important for children who have the opportunity to experience new things and establish other significant relationships.

Emergency

Carers who provide emergency care can be contacted at short notice at any time of the day. This type of care is required when a child urgently need somewhere to stay, it may just be an overnight stay or could be up to two weeks.

Short Term

This type of care gives birth families some time to manage a difficult issue before their child can return home. At the end of this period the child or young person may return to their family or be placed in long term care. This type of care can last from two weeks up to two years.

Long Term

For some children, returning to their parents or family will not be possible. Long-term care is provided until family circumstances change or until they turn 18 years of age and beyond.

Regardless of the care, Uniting Country SA values all who would raise their hand to help a child in need.
