Uniting Country SA’s foster carers come from all kinds of backgrounds; we welcome all people regardless of culture, language, ethnicity, sexuality, gender or religion. Our carers are everyday people who put their hand up to make a difference in a child’s life. You don’t have to be a superhero, you just have to care.

Ideal foster carers are able to readily seek help, work as part of a team, are patient and tolerant, can hang in there when times are tough, and can be flexible and sensitive towards others. Perhaps most importantly they possess a sense of humour. All our carers relate well with children and are committed to meeting a child’s needs.

Some qualities we look for in potential Foster Carers:

  • You understand that foster children will become part of your family, but will also have birth family and connections of their own.
  • You want to foster because you know that you can make a difference in the life of a child.
  • You are prepared for the challenges and rewards that come with caring for a child.
  • You have a strong network of family and friends who will help with the pressures of fostering.
  • You are a permanent resident of Australia.
  • you can pass a Working With Children clearance.
